ABOUT TEMPLE :-

There are 108 Shivalingas arranged equally in three rows in a separate mandapam and it is a wonderful sight to see so many lingams in one place. The presiding deity in the sanctum is Sri Ramalingaswany since it was worshipped by Sri Ramar.

Hanumantha lingam, the huge lingam brought by Hanumar from Kasi is kept in a separate annexe to the temple on the southern side.It is believed that worshiping Lord Shiva in this temple would remove all our sins and worshipping in this one temple is equivalent to worshipping in 108 temples

TEMPLE HISTORY (STHALA VARALARU):

After mother Sita rescued from king Ravanana, Lord Rama performed Shiva Puja in Rameswaram to clean himself from sins that befell on Him in the war killings. On the way to Ayodhya, Lord Rama felt that sins of killing Kara and Dooshana in Janasthanam were following Him. He decided to perform Shiva Puaja immediately. Rama installed 107 Shivalingas and asked Sri Anjaneya to bring one from Kasi thus making the total 108. Main Linga was named Ramalingawami and brought by Sri Anjaneya was named Hanumantha Linga. A shrine for Mother Parvadhavardhini was built later.

TEMPLE HISTORY

PAPANASAM:The place is called Papanasam as it destroyed the Papas (sins, Nasam-destroying) Lord Rama, Sri Anjaneya and Sri Sugriva incurred during the Lanka war by killing Ravana and others. The place has also the reputation of being praised as East Rameswaram – Keezh Rameswaram.

KAMADENU: The significance of the temple is Kamadenu has an equal place with Nandhi on Lord Shiva before His shrine. Lord Rama worshipped Kamadenu as advised by Maharshi Agasthya and it is also said that the Rishi himself worshiped the divine cow and continues the worship even now on Pradosham days.
