TEMPLE HISTORY (STHALA VARALARU)
Sage Durvasa: Sage was
engaged with Shiva rituals, Gandharva (a community in the celestial world)
mocked at old age appearance. Sage did not mind it but Gandharva continued to
do the mischief and even called him by clapping hand moved before him as a
cancer-Nandu. Sage reacted and cursed him born a
Nandu. Realizing his fault, he sought pardon of the
sage. He was advised to perform Shiva Puja to gain his original
form. He came to this place as a Nandu, bathed in the pushkarini,
picked up flowers and worshipped the Lord.
KARKADAKESWARAR: Lord
Indira (king of Devas) came to perform rituals as advised by his Guru to
acquire a power to conquer demons. He used to bath in pushkarini and
perforn Shiva Puja with 1008 lotus flowers every day .one day he found one
flower falling short with qty and noticied Nandu was doing puja with those
flowers. Lord indra reacted and tried to kill it with is sword. Lord
made a hole in his (Linga) body to escape from Indira’s attack. Yet, the Linga
was injured by the sword cut. Lord appeared before Indira and said
that one cannot succeed by arrogance but by humility alone. As Lord granted
salvation to Karkadaga-Nandu, He is praised as Karkadakeswarar.
ARUMARUNDHU DEVER:
A
swayambulinga existing in this place which got buried under the sand due to
natural disaster. Later some time when chola dynasty was ruling, Ruler of the
dynasty had an attack of paralysis, he tried to cure these with best
doctor/siddhar , but not able to cure. Finally fell at the feet of Lord Shiva.
As usual lord shiva play his game and appeared as aged couple and treated king
with holy water which dissolved with sacred ashes.
The king was
completely cured and requested them to stay in the dynasty as royal doctors and
offered them with gift of gold which they declined.king requested them what
exactly are their wish, old aged couple conveyed to build a temple where the
Shivalinga was buried and disappeared. The king understood that the
visitors were but Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi and built the temple.
