ABOUT TEMPLE :-
This is the 148th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 31st sthalam on south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Thiruganasambhandar and Appar have sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. 15 stone inscription are found on this inner Pragham of various Dynasty, Pandiyan King Maran sadayan from 6 to 8 century, Chola Dynasty from 9 to 11 Century .
This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva re innovated with stone building by the Chola King at the desire of his Queen Sembianmadhevi, mother of King Uthama Chozha and has been re innovated wih Raja Raja cholan I and II.

TEMPLE HISTORY (STHALA VARALARU)
King Vali effectively Ruled a place called Kishkinti. He was accompanied by his brother Sukriva on governance. Once Vali was forced to handle a fierce battle with Phantom. Due to his penance power his hand was on upper side due to that Phantom (Mayavi) who wish to survive vanished into a cave. Vali pursued him aggressively entered the cave. He could not trap Phantom .
Vowing not to move from here without phantom dead body. He waited for the arrival of the Phantom. As Days have passed. Sukriva was sad that his brother was dead in the cave. So, he Closed the cave entrance with a large stone and throne him as a king.
Several Days later, Vali, who destroyed phantom(Mayavi), try to emerge from the Cave. Block on the cave entrance was a big shock to him tried to get out of the cave but Could not. Finally, with all his power he broke the Rock in to Piece and Emerged out from Cave. As Sugriva in the throne. He Mis understood his own brother, as he Conspires and deceive him, so Sukriva was thrown out and Vali regain his power.
Sukriva was roaming around all places and Finally reached this place and worship the Lord Shiva. Who Protect and save him from obstacles. As vanarapadi King sukrivan prayed this Temple. This place is called as Thenkuranaduthurai.
