ABOUT TEMPLE :-
This is one of the 275 Thevara Padal Petra Sthalams and 30th Shiva temple on the northern bank of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns. The six centers in the human body known as Mooladhara, Swadishtana, Manipuraka, Anagatham, Vishuddhi and Aggna. Thiruneelakudi represents the Mooladhara position helping the devotee to raise the Kundalini Sakthi.

TEMPLE HISTORY (STHALA VARALARU)
Once upon a time there was a sage name Mirugandu lived in this area. He worshiped lord Shiva to have a child. Accepting sage’s prayer Lord Shiva one day appeared in front of the sage and asked him what he wants? The sage told him he and his wife was worried that they don’t have a kid.
Lord Shiva told Mirugandu that either he will have a very intelligent or smart son but who will live very short life or he will have a average son who will live for 100 years. Sage Mirugandu said to lord that he would prefer a brilliant son even though he won’t live for long years. Lord Shiva awarded the boon as per sage’s wish. Markandeyan was born for sage Mirugandu who was a great devotee of Lord Shiva.
From his childhood his parents make him as a deep devote of lord shiva by visiting every Shiva temples and perform rituals. Markandeyan reached the age of 16. He came to know from his parents that his life will come to an end when he completes the age of 16. Based on the suggestion from Saint naradha, He reached lord Thiruneelakudi and performed a severe penance here.
During the time of his daily Ritual, His life span end and Lord Yama dharmaraja reach his place to take him and Throw his rope, which unfortunately hit shivalinga because of markandeyan hug lord shiva. Yama action lead anger to lord, where he appears before him and kicked yama. Lord also inform shiva as he should approach his devotes without his knowledge.
Markandaya was blessed with Lord due to his penance and awarded the boon as Markandeyan will live at Thiruneelakudi forever and his age will be always 16.
